Today’s post follows last week’s blog about sectionals! It’s actually rather about how to dress the back of sofas – when it is in the middle of a room or adjoining another area like an entrance or a dining room. There’s nothing like a well-chosen piece of furniture to complete a living space while also concealing the back of a piece of furniture. Decorating behind a sofa can add a layer of depth and interest to a room -it is a stylish and functional way to spruce up the back of your sofa and make your living space more functional. For example, walking into a living room and seeing the back of a sofa can make it feel sectioned off. In these cases, placing a console table behind the sofa so that it is the first thing they see can act as a welcoming element to guests and make the space feel more put together by blending two areas. They are versatile pieces of furniture that can become highly essential for comfortable daily living. Or in smaller new York apartments, where there might not be a distinctive entrance, you can place a console behind a sofa, to be used as a storage element; a place to sort mail or even drop your belongings when you first walk in. Alternatively, it creates a visually interesting space divider to harmoniously delineate the sitting area from another room in an open floor plan – such as a breakfast nook or a dining room.
Styling your Sofa back console
STEP ONE: CHOOSE YOUR CONSOLE TABLE.
Opt for one with shelves or drawers for extra storage space and a more functional look. In terms of measurements, it shouldn’t be taller than the back height of your sofa and should allow for at least 6 inches of space on either ends of the console.
STEP TWO: CHOOSE YOUR DECORATIVE PIECES.
Place a catch-all sculptural bowl for corralling everyday items and adding some textured décor for more visual interest. For a more personalized setting, place some of your favorite photos in matching frames in the same metal tone as your decorative items. Avoid tall pieces that tower higher than the back of the sofa.
STEP THREE: ADD A LIGHT SOURCE.
Add some height on the side with a table lamp for the cozy factor, or to add some extra lumens as needed. You can place one on each side for a more symmetrical look.
STEP FOUR: ADD SOME FLOWERS OR A PLANT.
The must-use element in every one of our styling guides is some vibrant greenery or fresh blooms to bring life and a pop of color into the space.
STEP FIVE: USE THE EXTRA STORAGE SPACE.
The added shelf at the bottom of a console can provide additional space for everyday items in a box or a tray or even to showcase some decorative items, and store some books and blankets.
