Sofas are a key part of main living spaces and are a popular place to relax, watch TV and entertain friends. Versatile and comfortable, sectionals can fit into large cavernous living spaces as well as in small studios while providing flexible seating options.
We love sourcing sectionals for our clients with families as it is a more relaxed shape than a regular sofa, and allows for families to spread out, or snuggle close. We also mostly prefer to use sectionals for living spaces with open floor plans, as they help create a sense of distinctive space. But styling a sectional can be tricky due to the sheer size and their multiple corners, and since it’s a focal point in your space, you want it to look elegant and stylish, yet still be cozy and comfortable. These simple tips will make your sectional look styled, while still allowing it to be functional enough to maximize your living room’s space.
Styling your sectional
STEP ONE: USE YOUR PILLOWS
The first thing we’ll do is establish a color palette. Begin by using either the color of your sectional as a point of reference, or choose a color that is found throughout your home, and add in colors that flow homogenously together to create an elevated and visually balanced look that tie in with the rest of your home.
Next, start by placing your biggest pillow on the back corner of the sectional. It serves as a backdrop for layering in the smaller pillows in front. Basically, this corner of the sectional should have the highest concentration of pillows for all the corners!
STEP TWO: FILL THE SOFA ENDS.
Fill the look with pillows on both ends of the sectional. Create layers by using pillows of different shapes, sizes and fabrics. Mix and match lumbar, square and round decorative throw pillows.
Karate chop them in the middle or fluff them, to keep them always looking full, and not depleted.
STEP THREE: ADD A THROW.
Whether it is placed on the seat or over the arm of the sectional, a throw blanket is a needed addition to give the space a cozy, comfortable and lived-in feel. Choose luxurious fabrics like mohair, wool blends and knits, and look for tonal textured patterns that add warmth.
STEP FOUR: ACCESSORIZE THE LOOK.
Pair it with a coffee table that is the correct proportion for your sofa, a vibrant green plant, and a gorgeous floor lamp to create a perfectly styled look.
